Signed page - British museum director and academic, she was the first woman director of a national arts collection when she was appointed as director of the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1987, considered one of the most prestigious in the world.

In 1994 she resigned, after criticism for changes she had made to broaden the museum's appeal, having, after 50 years of major structural neglect, she had the building restored inside and out and was credited with modernising and revitalising the Museum, making it fit for the next Century.
