Signed page - Chairman and chief executive of British retailer Marks and Spencer from 1988 to 1999. He grew the company to become the second most profitable retailer in the world after Wal-Mart, undertook an enormous international expansion, with the largest number of employees, stores, floor space, share price, market share and pre and post-tax profits of any retailer in Europe.

When he left, the company suffered a downturn in fortunes and he went on to author the Corporate Governance Greenbury report on Directors Remuneration which became known as the Greenbury Report.
