(1914-1995) American medical researcher and virologist who created the polio vaccine. Polio was considered the most frightening public health problem of the postwar United States with annual epidemics leaving victims with mild to disabling paralysis, sometimes death, with most of the victims children, many of who would never walk again and whose bodies would be paralyzed for life, living on what were called iron lungs.
