By 1997 Currie had lost her seat but had forged a career as a novelist and broadcaster. Frequently outspoken, she was described as "a virtually permanent fixture on the nation's TV screen saying something outrageous about just about anything". She has written a number of novels, one of which revealed her affair with former Prime Minister John Major.
