A Autograph Signed Letter by Charles Scribner III (26,01,1890 - 11,02,1952), American Novelist, Nobel Prize winner for Literature,American Publisher. Interesting T.L.S., Charles Scribner, New York, 26th September 1949, to Harold K. Guinsburg of The Viking Press, on the printed stationery of Charles Scribner's Sons. Scribner informs his correspondent that he cannot approve of his correspondent reprinting a new edition of 5000 copies of the Portable Hemingway, continuing to explain 'I realise that you are still free to sell the Portable for approximately six months and, if you had suggested printing an edition of 2500, I would be inclined to agree, even if it took you something over six months to sell it out. You tell me, however, that this is not practical, but to have an edition that ran over a year would interfere with my own plans and those of Ernest Hemingway.' In concluding Scribner states that Hemingway is 'fully aware of the situation and it is not only with his approval that I am cancelling your license to print the Portable, but he definitely wishes me to do so.
